We collected data on root traits and rhizosphere chemistry, and rhizosphere bacteria (abundance, community composition, and activity) of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), from a unique microcosm-based experiment in which the presence and absence of soil herbivorous and bacterivorous nematodes were manipulated. We aimed to determine the individual and combined impact of these nematodes on soil bacterial community composition and activity, and whether these effects were mediated by root phenotypic plasticity and rhizosphere chemistry.
