This dataset is a scanned copy of ANARE Research Notes 36, which describes the Ctenophores of the Southern Ocean. It lists all the known species and with illustrated diagrams provides a guide to their taxonomic identification.Taken from the abstract:A total of nine species, Pleurobrachia pileus (Muller), Bathyctenidae chuni (Moser), Callianira antarctica (Chun), C. cristata (Moser), Lyrocteis flavopallidus (Robilliard and Dayton), Beroe cucumis (Fabricus), B. compacta (Moser), B. forskalii (Milne Edwards and Cryptocoda gerlachei Leloup have been reported from the Southern Ocean. Their diagnostic characters are given together with a diagram of their external features and a map of their distribution.The Ctenophora is a small phylum of marine animals commonly known as comb jellies. They are biradially symmetrical with a transparent gelatinous ectomesoderm containing mesenchymal muscle fibres.
