VPRS 12437 Ledger, Melbourne to Sale Road

The Central Roads Board, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744). The Department divided Victoria into Road Districts each under the supervision of a Road Engineer.This series consists of records maintained by the Road Engineer responsible for the construction of the Melbourne to Sale Road, a major project for the Department. Included are records relating to the details of contracts and payments made to contractors and payments to municipalities after the putting in to place of the arrangements set out by the Local Government Act 1863.This series was formerly registered as Unit 20 of VPRS 1143 Ledgers.
