Washing laundry is one of the most common household chores, and the global market for washing machines is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. With the increasing trend toward machines equipped with automatic liquid detergent dosing systems, which enhance the ease of use and reduce water and detergent consumption, there is a need to address the limitations in bleaching performance of liquid detergents. This study examines an innovative methodology by incorporating an in situ bleach-generating reactor into a washing machine equipped with automatic liquid detergent dosing systems. The reactor produces hydrogen peroxide through the electrochemical reduction of oxygen using carbon-based gas diffusion electrodes. A comprehensive life cycle assessment compared three bleaching scenarios over 2500 washing cycles: manual dosing with powder detergent and two automatic systems combining liquid detergent with a bleach reactor. Compared with manual dosing, we report significantly lower emissions for both automatic dosing systems. When an optimized reactor design is used, the emissions are particularly low.
