Insights to marmoset superior colliculus neuroanatomy in healthy brain or post-injury

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is an increasingly popular model organism for the human brain as its simpler brain structure organization and shorter maturation period (compared to macaques) allow for extensive neuroanatomical exploration. The superior colliculus (SC), a layered midbrain structure, is a key polysensory and sensorimotor integration hub highly involved with the visual pathway. However, very little is known about the neuroanatomy of the healthy marmoset SC, let alone how it may change after injury. This study provides quantitative and qualitative analysis of the marmoset SC neuroanatomy in both healthy state and post-injury.
