A new type of cationic N-heterocyclic carbene ligand has been developed by attachment of a cationic organometallic [(C5Me5)Ru]+ fragment to a benzimidazolium cation and subsequent deprotonation of the dicationic sandwich complex. The coordination chemistry and electronic properties of the new carbene were investigated by experimental and theoretical methods.
