S4 - Level III Research Station - Youth Incorporated
The Southern Oxidants Study (SOS) conducted a major field research
campaign in Nashville/Middle Tennessee area in June and July 1994 and
1995. The goal of this study was to improve scientific understanding
of the processes that control the production and distribution of ozone
in the troposphere.
During the six-week 1995 Southern Oxidants Study (SOS) Nashvile/Middle
Tennessee Ozone Study the Level III Youth Incorporated research
station participated in a variety of volatile organic compound (VOC)
sampling and analysis activities under the overall direction of Rod
Zika (University of Miami). Youth Incoporated also served as a
canister VOC laboratory for the Level II enhanced chemistry surface
stations, the TVA Bell 205 helicopter, and the DOE Grumman G-1. These
pressurized, SUMMA@ canister samples were analyzed for selected C2 to
C10 VOC compounds using GC/FID. Also, the University of Miami
collected and analyzed continuous "real-time" VOC samples for selected
C3 to C10 VOC compounds using GC/FID/MSD techniques. Steve Bertman
(Western Michigan) measured PAN/MPAN using GC/ECD and Paul Shepson
(Purdue University) measured isoprene oxidation products using
GC/MSD. The Youth Incorporated station was also the site of Level II
enhanced chemistry measurements (SOS_S2), radar profiler/RASS
measurements (SOS_M1), and an aldehyde methods intercomparison
(SOS_Q4).
The study was conducted from June 19, 1995 through July 28, 1995.
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was the coordinator for the 1995
Southern Oxidants Study Nashville/Middle Tennessee Ozone Study. See:
