Parelaphostrongylus tenuis, known also as brainworm or meningeal worm, is a parasitic nematode with a definitive white-tailed deer host and gastropod intermediate host. P. tenuis is rarely pathogenic in white-tailed deer but can cause morbidity and mortality in other ungulates, which are aberrant dead-end hosts. These aberrant infections can drive population declines, as appears to be the case for moose in Minnesota.
