Besides being part of intestinal human microflora, Escherichia coli is often a cause of urinary tract infections and enteric diseases. It occurs due to the diversity of strains that can be pathogenic or non-pathogenic. Pathogenic strains usually carry resistence and/or virulence factors encoded on extrachromosomal plasmids. This strain belonged to ST224 and it was isolated from a urine culture from a patient of a Brazilian university hospital. Among the resistence factors, this infectitve E. coli carries beta-lactam resistance KPC-2 genes on plasmid, and about virulence genes, it is able to produce frimbiae (lpfA) and glutamate decarboxylase (gad).
