This dataset contains anonymized clinical MRI studies or scans from 515 symptomatic back pain patients. Each patient may have one or more associated MRI studies. Each study contains slices: individual images acquired from sagittal or axial views of the lowest three vertebrae and the lowest three intervertebral discs (IVDs). Axial view slices are primarily taken from the final three IVDs—including one between the final vertebra and the sacrum. Slices for the final IVD follow the curvature of the spine, while slices for other IVDs are typically acquired in blocks (i.e., parallel to one another). From the top to the bottom of an IVD, there are 4 to 5 slices per IVD. Many top and bottom slices pass through vertebrae, leaving 1 to 3 slices that cleanly section the IVD and purely display images of that IVD. In most cases, the total number of slices in an axial view ranges between 12 and 15. However, in some cases, there may be up to 20 slices, as the study includes slices beyond the final three vertebrae. Sagittal scans also vary, but all include at least the final seven vertebrae and the sacrum. Although the number of vertebrae differs, every scan consistently includes the first two sacral segments. There are a total of 48,345 MRI slices in our dataset. Most slices have an image resolution of 320×320 pixels; however, slices from three studies have a resolution of 320×310 pixels. The pixel precision across all slices is 12 bits per pixel, which is higher than standard 8-bit grayscale images. Specifically, for all axial slices, the slice thickness is uniformly 4 mm, and the center-to-center distance between adjacent slices is 4.4 mm. The horizontal and vertical pixel spacing is uniformly 0.6875 mm across all axial view slices. Most MRI studies were performed with the patient in the head-first supine position, while the remaining studies used the foot-first supine position. Each study can last from 15 to 45 minutes, and patients may undergo one or more associated studies at different times or on different days.
