Mechanical nanoarchitected metamaterials exhibit exotic static properties due to their precisely engineered structure. These materials can be designed to exhibit frequency-dependent properties and resilience under high-strain-rate deformation, making them highly versatile for applications such as lightweight impact resistance, acoustic waveguiding, and vibration damping. However, studying strain mechanisms at small scales remains challenging due to low-throughput and destructive characterization methods. Therefore, despite their high potential, their 3D strain and damage mechanisms across different strain rates are still not well understood, preventing the validation of FE simulations and limiting their potential use in many applications. The aim of this proposal is thus to identify the strain mechanisms in nano-architected materials during a compressive loading and how it is modified by the strain-rate.
