Malus sieversii, a tertiary relic plant, has been confirmed as the primary ancestor of most cultivated apple species. Malus sieversii is mainly distributed in central Asian, especially in Tianshan Forest of Xinjiang, China. It was first described in 1833 by Carl Friedrich von Ledebour, a German naturalist who saw them growing in the Altai Mountains.
