Garlic with Apple Pomace or Blackcurrant on Gut Microbiota in Organic Weaners

This study evaluated the effects of dietary garlic combined with either apple pomace or blackcurrant on the gut microbiota and mucosal antioxidant indicators in weaned pigs challenged with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). Conducted in two blocks with 32 pigs, the treatments included a non-challenged control, an ETEC-challenged control, ETEC-challenged with garlic and apple pomace, and ETEC-challenged with garlic and blackcurrant. Results showed that the garlic and fruit combinations improved gut health by increasing beneficial bacteria, enhancing antioxidant enzyme activities, and promoting favorable fermentation patterns. Overall, these dietary supplements supported a healthier gut microbial ecosystem in weaned pigs.
