Asylum seekers

Number of asylum seekers by country of origin. This indicator refers to individuals seeking international protection, including those who have applied for refugee status or complementary international protection but have not yet received a final decision on their claim. It also encompasses those who may intend to submit an application or are in need of international protection. While not all asylum seekers are ultimately recognized as refugees, every refugee begins as an asylum seeker. Asylum seekers are entitled to certain minimum standards of treatment and cannot be returned to their country of origin until their claim has been assessed through a fair procedure.
