A transect-survey of vegetation composition and structure was conducted in the Main camp-section of the Addo Elephant National Park to monitor the effects of large herbivores, in particular elephant. Transects were permanently marked in 1977, when they were first surveyed, with further monitoring in 1981, 1989 and 2008 (providing temporal coverage of 31 years). Experimental plots were 5 m wide, while plot length scaled inversely with the abundance of the dominant shrub taxa. The following variables were recorded for each plant located along transects: (1) plant species, (2) maximum canopy height, (3) maximum crown diameter [D1], and (4) maximum crown diameter [D2] perpendicular to D1.
