Triassic break-up of Pangea in southern Mexico: thermochronological evidence from the Tianguistengo formation

In this study, based on apatite geochemistry and fission-track-based time–temperature modelling of the Tianguistengo Formation, we demonstrate that the main source terrane (Totoltepec Pluton) was exhumed rapidly in Late Triassic time. This interpretation is important for a better understanding of the geodynamic processes linked to the Pangea breakup. Most authors suggested that the Pangea breakup started in Mexico in Jurassic time. For the first time, we present thermochronological evidence of an earlier Pangea rupture in Mexico, which should have started in Middle-Late Triassic time.
