The Chief Traffic Manager of the Traffic Branch created this volume for reference purposes. The subject matter of this volume pertains to the Darling Harbour rail yards and meat markets including employee lists, distribution lists, and details leading to the establishment of the chilled meat trade.Employee lists record the name, position, wage details and home addresses of staff, some lists containing details that refer to other unknown volumes. A section devoted to distribution lists provides circulation instructions, the names and signatures of recipients who received various nominated items.A substantial part of this volume is devoted to the establishment of the chilled meat trade. Discussed are ideas put forward to the Railway Commissioners to transport chilled beef, mutton and pork carcases from country abattoirs to Sydney via refrigerator vans. Included are the text of a contract between the Commissioners and private individuals to utilise Railway facilities at Darling Harbour Meat Markets, and a contemporary return of observations made at the Markets. Custody History:From 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as series R218. It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R218 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works.
