Flammulina velutipes has a long history of consumption and cultivation in East-Asia, yet recently this mushroom is being produced in Western countries as well. F. velutipes is in the first place consumed for its culinary traits but has in addition a range of health beneficial effects and is known as a wood rotting fungus that can degrade lignocellulose. The organism is a highly attractive model for studying medicinal effect and a source of enzymes capable of efficient degradation of lignocellulosic biomass for bioethanol production.
