This series contains the Inwards Correspondence Registers of the Municipality of Balmain. The first volume contains an index, recording name of correspondent and page number. The registers are handwritten. The Council received correspondence from individuals, organisations and government departments. Subjects covered by the correspondence include: rating inquiries, use and hire of Council facilities, applications to construct signs, amendment of by laws, inquiries re licensing fees, comments / complaints regarding the maintenance and repair program operated by the council, comments/complaints on general council services, requests for donations, requests for relief for the employed, assessment of the value of properties, application for building works, notification regarding the sale of properties, and subdivisions, and invitations for Councillors/Aldermen and the Mayor to attend external events.Volume one of the registers is arranged numerically. The following information is contained in the register: progressive number, date received, subject, and author of the correspondence. From July 1941 a signature is recorded for the Council officer responsible for attending to the correspondence (Action officer).Volume two of the registers is arranged chronologically. An annual single number has not been assigned to the correspondence in this register. The following information is contained in the register: date received, subject, and author of the correspondence. Until November 1941 the title of the action officers within the Council and their signature has been recorded. The second volume contains loose inwards correspondence. This correspondence has been recorded in the register. Only a fragment of the correspondence that these register controls has been located. The remainder may not be extant. Custody History This series was in the custody of Mitchell library until December 2001 when it was transferred to State Records NSW under section 29 of the State Records Act, 1998.
