This strain was originally classified as Arthrobacter sp. NI86/21, and later as Rhodococcus sp. NI86/21, and finally it got its correct classification as R. erythropolis NI86/21. It was one of the firsts Rhodococcus strains described as xenobioticum degrader, as it can grow on thiocarbamate and triazin herbicides as sole carbon and energy source. Besides this, the pFAJ2574 E. coli-Rhodococcus shuttle vector and a transposon mutagenesis tool were developed using genetic elements of the strain. The 20S proteasome of this strain was described as the first eubacterial 20S proteasome.Isolation source: rhizosphere of maize.
