The pan trap
technique was done in this study to compare the number of insects found on
different colours of bowls in both the grassland and woodlot due to the
attraction of the insects to certain colours. This study began at 3:25pm in the
grasslands and woodlots of York University Keele campus located at York Blvd.
and Keele St (43.7 degrees north, 75.9 degrees West). Weather conditions of the
grassland and woodlot were partly cloudy, partly sunny and windy at a temperature
of 21 degrees Celsius. In this study 4 yellow, 3 blue and 3 white bowls were
randomly placed in the grassland and wood lot, for a total sample number of 20. Soapy
water was poured into each bowl until each bowl was completely filled. At 4:20pm,
the number of taxonomic units (measured in rtus) and the number of insects in
each of the bowls for each colour were counted by observation and recorded for
the grassland and the woodlot. Overall, the whole experiment took 55 minutes. The location where the bowls were placed were
categorical variables as the 2 locations used were the grassland and woodlot. The continuous data used in the experiment were the number of insects
recorded as well as the taxonomic units found (in rtus), which indicated the number of
species found. It was hypothesized that the brighter the colour of the bowl, the higher
the number of insects found. In other words, more insects will be attracted to
the yellow and white bowls in both the grassland and woodlot compared to the
blue bowls.
