VPRS 1124 Letter Book and Ledger, Sydney Road

The Central Road Board (VA 2803) was established circa March 1853 with responsibility for the formation, construction, improvement, management and maintenance of proclaimed main roads and bridges and for the co-ordination of the works undertaken by the District Road Boards. The primary officers were the Secretary, Treasurer and an Inspector-General of Roads. The Central Road Board was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).This series contains copies of the letters in 1854 to and from W Z Perrott, Road Engineer to the Central Road Board concerning the Sydney Road. It is possible that this correspondence was copied from the originals at a later time. Also included are the monthly and yearly returns regarding the work from 1854 to 1857 with these providing details of the costs of the work, the contracts let for the work and progress on it. They provide a summary financial and work record.
