NRS-18091 | Council Minutes [Newcastle College of Advanced Education]

This series consists of bound, official copies of the Minutes of the Interim Council of the Newcastle Teachers College, the First Constituted Council and the Council of the Newcastle College of Advanced Education. The earliest Minutes of the Interim Council to be included in this series date from the 8 April, 1974, and are numbered 2/74. Copies of the Minutes of the Interim Council meetings dating from October, November and December 1973, and February 1974, can be found in NRS 18094 (Interim Council Agenda and Papers), where they form part of the Business Papers of subsequent meetings. The Interim Council met for the last time on the 9th September 1974.On the 1st October 1974, the first College Council of the Newcastle College of Advanced Education (the First Constituted Council), appointed under Section 16(6) of the Higher Education Act, 1969, assumed office. The final meeting of the First Constituted Council took place on the 21st February 1977. The Council elected in accordance with the provisions of the College By-Law under Section 16(7) of the Higher Education Act, 1969 (the Reconstituted Council) met for the first time on the 18th April 1977. This Council, which, like its precursors, normally met monthly, continued as the governing body of the College (whose name was changed to the Hunter Institute of Higher Education at the beginning of 1988) until the amalgamation of the College with the University of Newcastle in 1989. The final meeting of the Council prior to the amalgamation took place on the 19th October 1989.Bound in with this series are the Minutes for a meeting of the College Planning Committee held on the 28th of August, 1986. These were evidently included here due to the unusual circumstance of this meeting of the Planning Committee having been held in place of a Council meeting which failed of a quorum.
