The Cowra Municipality Council was in correspondence with individuals, organisations and government departments and that was recorded in the Correspondence Registers.Many aspects of the Council’s operations were covered by the correspondence including: rating inquiries, use and hire of Council facilities, applications to construct signs, amendment of by laws, inquiries regarding licensing fees, comments or complaints regarding the maintenance and repair program operated by the Council, comments or complaints on general Council services, requests for donations, requests for relief for the employed, assessment of the value of properties and application for building works.The first two volumes registered both inwards and outwards correspondence in separate sections. The entries contain the following information: number, date of letter, date received, from whom received or to whom sent, file number and subject. The remainder of registers record inwards correspondence only. Volumes three and four are arranged chronologically according to the date of receipt and contain the following information: date received, file number from whom received, the subject, referred to and remarks or date of reply.The fifth and subsequent registers are arranged alphabetically according the correspondent and contain following information: date received, number, file number, name, subject, referred to, remarks or date of reply. Only a fragment of the correspondence controlled by these registers appears to have survived and is found loose inside Register number two. The registers prior to 1954 may not be extant.
