European Directive 2006/40/EC on mobile air conditioning (MAC) bans the use of refrigerant R134a in passenger vehicles because of its impact on Climate Change. To assist with the selection of its replacement, an industry wide evaluation of replacement candidates was undertaken.
The evaluation was very comprehensive and addressed performance, compatibility and safety. The outcome of the evaluation, was that HFO-1234yf was identified as an optimal replacement for R-134a in Mobile Air Conditioning.
The paper will briefly go through the selection process used by the automotive industry to demonstrate that HFO-1234yf is suitable for use in direct-expansion air-conditioning systems.
