Flood in Southern Italy (2026-01-20)

On 20 January 2026 at 00:00, a Mediterranean cyclone (named Harry) was expected to affect Sicily, Sardinia, and the Calabria Region, Italy. The cyclone, located between Algeria and Tunisia, generated a severe storm system with very intense southerly flows. Extremely heavy rainfall affected the impacted areas, with over 200 mm recorded in Calabria, and accumulations exceeding 200 mm expected within 24 hours over Sicily and southern Calabria. In addition to the heavy precipitation, very strong southerly winds, was expected to exceed 100 km/h, generated very high waves of up to 6 metres along exposed coastlines. Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping was requested to provide Flood extent and damage assessment emergency mapping.
