Eutrophication shapes methane cycling in freshwater sediments by altering microbial communities. In Lake Joux, past nutrient influxes drove shifts from methylotrophic to hydrogenotrophic methanogens and enhanced aerobic methanotrophs in anoxic layers. This highlights how nutrient regimes influence methane emissions through microbial dynamics. Sequencing was performed at the Joint Microbiome Facility of the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna under the project ID JMF-2310-14.
