A global eddy-collocated temperature and salinity profile dataset

This repository contains a global dataset of 5.46 million mesoscale eddy-collocated temperature and salinity profiles spanning 29 years (1993–2021). The dataset is constructed by integrating multiplatform in situ hydrographic measurements with satellite-tracked mesoscale eddy products and supports the publication entitled "A global eddy-collocated temperature and salinity profile dataset (v1.0): integrating multiplatform in situ observations with satellite-tracking mesoscale eddies" (He et al., 2026). The dataset includes yearly netCDF files from 1993 to 2021, named "T_S_profile_eddy_xxxx". Each file contains quality-controlled in situ temperature and salinity profiles, together with dynamically relevant eddy-matching variables. Specifically, the dataset provides observed temperature and salinity values, temperature and salinity anomalies relative to local monthly climatology, profile-eddy relative distance and azimuth, and fundamental eddy properties including eddy center coordinates, polarity (cyclonic/anticyclonic), amplitude, radius, rotational speed, edge contour, normalized age, as well as trajectory and observation indices from the original satellite eddy product. This dataset represents an updated version of the eddy-collocated profile data used in He et al. (2024), which is also provided in this repository as a unified file "Eddy_Collocated_T-S_profiles_Global_1993-2021.nc". Compared with the earlier version, the present dataset adopts the newly quality-controlled and bias-corrected World Ocean Database (WOD) profile product (CODC-v1; Zhang et al., 2024; Tan et al., 2025) to replace the original observational profiles. The updated CODC-v1 observations more than double the effective sampling size, substantially improving the spatial and temporal coverage of eddy-associated in situ measurements. This expanded dataset offers enhanced opportunities to investigate mesoscale eddy-driven ocean processes, including three-dimensional thermohaline structural anomalies, heat and salt redistribution, water mass transport, and ocean extreme events at refined spatiotemporal resolutions.
