资源简介:
We take advantage of the Argentine government's sharp increase in public utility rates in some wealthy households but not others to study preferences for redistribution among affluent citizens in a developing democracy. A policy design that led to "as-if" random assignment of rate-payers to the price hike, combined with an original survey experiment, allows us to assess the causal impact of pocketbook concerns and interpersonal comparisons, within and across classes. We find that having their rates quintuple did not sour affluent porteños on redistribution; being reminded that they had fared worse than their neighbors did sour them. The message of our study, that support among the wealthy for redistribution is vulnerable to intraclass feelings of resentment or relative deprivation, is relevant beyond the Argentine case.
