This study investigated the effects of combined pruning and thinning on the phenotype and biomass of four tree and shrub species (Vachellia etbaica, Juniperus procera, Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata, and Euclea racemosa) in exclosures in Tigray, Ethiopia. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of pruning and thinning on the growth and biomass of these species, as well as the regeneration of vegetation, including grass cover and new plant species.<br>The researchers applied four treatments: control (no treatment), 25% pruning and thinning, 35% pruning and thinning, and 50% pruning and thinning. Measurements were taken over a period of three years to assess the effects on diameter at breast height and stump height, height, crown diameter, biomass, and seedling growth.<br>The results showed that pruning and thinning at varying intensities (25% and 35%) led to increased biomass of trees and shrubs, particularly for V. etbaica and O. europaea. O. europaea and J. procera showed larger seedling heights in the 25% pruning and thinning treatments compared to the other treatments. Additionally, grass cover was significantly increased in two of the study sites (Kihen and Tukul) following pruning and thinning treatments compared to the control.<br>The study concludes that pruning and thinning can have a positive impact on forest health and productivity by increasing biomass, growth of regenerated seedlings, and grass cover. The results suggest that tailored silvicultural management practices can improve productivity and biomass through selective pruning and thinning of tree and shrub species in exclosures.
