Snow cover is the most widely distributed and most dynamically varying component of the cryosphere. Its unique characteristics of high albedo and low thermal conductivity play a critical role in regulating surface energy budget, land-atmosphere interactions and hydrological processes. Limited by the spatial resolution, temporal resolution and available time series of early sensors, there is still a lack of long-time-series snow cover extent (SCE) products with 500m spatial resolution prior to 2000.
