The Pasteurellaceae family is often associated with fatal infectious diseases in birds. Several new species and taxa within this family have been reported in avian hosts, however their epidemiology and the pathogenic role are not completely understood. Here, we describe the characterization of Bisgaard taxon 40 (Pasteurellaceae), which was implicated in a mass mortality event affecting terns (Thalasseus sandvicensis and Sterna hirundo) in Florida, USA.
