Early Modern Italian Travel Manuals Geodataset (Francesco Scoto, 1650–1700)
收藏资源简介:
This dataset contains georeferenced transcriptions of four editions of early modern travel manuals published by Francesco Scoto (1650, two editions from 1675, and 1700). These manuals provide structured descriptions of long-distance routes across the Italian Peninsula and adjacent regions. The dataset is composed of four CSV tables, each representing one edition. Each row corresponds to a single itinerary entry, including original place names, route descriptions, distances, and additional contextual information. Locations were reconciled through a central project gazetteer and georeferenced primarily using GeoNames. Version 1.2 expands and revises the spatial identification of locations through additional historical and topographical research and comparison with the EMDigIt (Early Modern Digital Itineraries) Core Italian Itineraries gazetteer. Where reliable coordinates are available but no GeoNames identifier could be assigned, the coordinates are retained while the GeoNames fields remain empty. Across the four editions, the dataset contains 2,597 total rows, of which 1,775 represent locational entries (LineType = location). A total of 1,727 entries (97.3%) have geographic coordinates, and 1,705 (96.1%) are linked to GeoNames identifiers. Twenty-two locational entries have coordinates but no GeoNames identifier, while 48 remain unresolved and are preserved without coordinates to maintain completeness and transparency. Version 1.2 also introduces the order_corrected and order_affected tags in the Note field to document research-based editorial corrections to itinerary sequence. The dataset enables reconstruction and comparison of early modern route networks, analysis of spatial connectivity, and integration with other historical or GIS-based datasets. It is designed for reuse in HGIS, digital humanities, travel history, and network analysis.
