Preventing the spread of tilapia to southern GBR catchments

Collaborating NRM Groups (RC, NQDT & FBA) will facilitate on-ground activities to prevent the spread of pest fish species tilapia. Tilapia are currently a priority noxious fish species under the QLD Fisheries Act 1994, & present a real & imminent threat to the health & resilience of Australia's aquatic biodiversity. Significantly, tilapia reduce water quality by deracinating & consuming large quantities of native macropyhtes; leading to increased sedimentation & reducing the capacity of wetlands & waterways to filter & remove pollutants. This project aims to prevent the rapid spread of tilapia from the Wet tropics into the Pioneer & Fitzroy Basin catchments as well as southern GBR catchments & potentially the Murray-Darling Basin.
