THE ROLE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR IN UZBEKISTAN'S ECONOMY AND THE APPLICATION OF INNOVATIONS

The construction sector occupies a central position in Uzbekistan’s economic and social transformation. Accounting for an estimated 6–7 percent of GDP and employing over one million workers, the sector serves as a cornerstone of both urban development and rural modernization. The construction industry’s significance extends beyond direct contributions to gross domestic product: it stimulates growth in manufacturing, transport, finance, and services, and serves as a barometer of economic dynamism. In recent years, Uzbekistan has pursued ambitious reforms under its “Uzbekistan 2030” Strategy, with the construction sector at the center of these efforts. This article analyzes the economic weight of construction in Uzbekistan, its socio-economic importance, and the innovations reshaping the industry. Topics include the role of housing and infrastructure in sustaining growth, the adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM), energy‑efficient materials, and digital tools such as drones and artificial intelligence. The article also evaluates structural challenges—workforce skills, financing, and regulatory frameworks—and provides policy recommendations. The findings suggest that the construction industry, if adequately modernized, could act as a multiplier for sustainable development and as a gateway for Uzbekistan’s integration into global economic systems.
