Analytical writing quality: bridging researchers' and teachers' appraisals in L2 Spanish

This repository contains the anonymised data and full statistical analysis files associated with the article “Analytical writing quality: bridging researchers’ and teachers’ appraisals in L2 Spanish” (under review in Vigo International Journal of Applied Linguistics). The materials document the analysis of the relationship between researcher-based indicators of analytical writing quality and teacher-based evaluations in second language (L2) Spanish. The study examines analytical texts written by 86 university learners of L2 Spanish from four learner groups differing in their first language (L1) and proficiency level: L1 English and L1 Hebrew learners at the intermediate level, and L1 French and L1 Dutch learners at the advanced level. The repository includes the anonymised SPSS data matrix, the SPSS syntax used to conduct the analyses, and the full SPSS output containing the statistical tests and model results reported in the manuscript. These files document the analyses of linguistic and text-structure indicators, teacher-based rubric scores, global evaluations, group comparisons, correlations, exploratory factor analyses, and generalized linear models. Additionally, the repository includes two anonymised annotation models used in the study: one for rhetorical structure and one for discourse markers. These files illustrate the coding procedures applied to the texts, including rhetorical move segmentation and the identification (non)canonical discourse markers. All materials have been anonymised in accordance with institutional and data-protection guidelines. The repository is intended to support transparency, reproducibility, and review of the statistical analyses and coding procedures reported in the article.
