Data for the paper: Allison, E. and Kenward,H. 2022. Insect remains from excavations at Posthustorvet in Ribe. In: S. Sindbæk (ed.) Northern Emporium vol. I The Making of Viking-age Ribe. Aarhus: Jutland Archaeological Society pp. 389-416. Abstract: Ribe was one of a small number of emporia that emerged as hubs for maritime networks around the North and Baltic Seas from the seventh century onwards. Ribe itself, the earliest-known Danish town, appears to have developed in the eighth century. In 2017-2018, excavation of substantial parts of two settlement plots (plots 1 and 2) and the adjacent street frontage took place in what would have been a central part of the earliest town. Forty-four samples from deposits within and around buildings were submitted for insect extraction and analysis. Twenty-two samples produced significant numbers of identifiable remains.
