Analysis of business establishments, employment, manufacturing subsectors, and building use approvals in Seongsu-dong, Seoul.

This supplementary dataset supports the article “The Productive Palimpsest: Quasi-Industrial Zoning and Industrial Recomposition in Seongsu-dong, Seoul” by Dongwoo Yim and Heidi Youngha Cho. The dataset compiles and harmonizes official business-establishment and workplace-employment statistics for the four administrative dongs that constitute the Seongsu-dong study area—Seongsu 1-ga 1-dong, Seongsu 1-ga 2-dong, Seongsu 2-ga 1-dong, and Seongsu 2-ga 3-dong—for the period 2015–2024. The source data were obtained from the annual Business Survey reports published by Seongdong-gu, Seoul. The supplementary workbook includes: Data S1: Annual establishment and workplace-employment aggregates by industrial classification, 2015–2024. Table S1: Crosswalk between official industrial classifications and the functional groups used in the article. Table S2: Annual establishment and employment series for manufacturing subsectors. Table S3: Five-digit industries showing the largest workplace-employment increases between 2020 and 2024. An important methodological discontinuity occurs in 2020, when the Korean Census on Establishments shifted to a registration-based enumeration framework that expanded coverage of businesses without separate physical workplaces. For this reason, the article interprets 2015–2019 and 2020–2024 as internally comparable intervals rather than treating the full period as a single continuous establishment series. The statistical unit is the combined area of the four administrative dongs and does not correspond exactly to the legally designated quasi-industrial zone. The dataset therefore represents the broader Seongsu-dong study area, which also includes residential and green areas. The dataset is provided to support transparency, reproducibility, and verification of the quantitative analyses reported in the associated article.
