The overall objective of the Coupled Growth in Hypermonotectics is to understand the fundamental physics controlling solidification in immiscible alloy systems. Specific experimental goals were (1) to show that production of an aligned fibrous microstructure is possible in hypermonotectic alloys by achieving interfacial stability and steady state coupled growth through microgravity processing, (2) to determine the influence of alloy composition and growth velocity on microstructure, and (3) to determine the growth velocity and composition range over which interface stability is possible in a hypermonotectic alloy system.
