The determination of state of residual stresses in TRISO nuclear fuels

This study will focus on the use of scanning three-dimensional synchrotron X-ray diffraction (3D-XRD) method at ID-11 to quantify the following parameters in the polycrystalline SiC layer from a TRIstructural-ISOtropic (TRISO) nuclear fuel particles: (a) the initial (or “as-received”) microstructure, (b) initial state of residual stresses in 3D, (c) the variation of microstructure and internal stresses with varying temperature from 25 °C to 650 °C. In thi study surrogate TRISO fuel particles will be studied that have no radioactive material and are safe to work with.
