Hares (genus Lepus) have provided charismatic examples of massive and repeated introgressive hybridization and spectacular adaptations, but genomic studies have so far used of the European rabbit genome as reference (estimated ~12 million years divergence). To increase the genomic resources on the genus, we report the first draft reference genome of a hare, the mountain hare (Lepus timidus).
