The ~3.5 Ga old barite-chert-hosted stromatolites of the Dresser Formation, Pilbara Craton (Australia), are among the oldest known fossiliferous rocks on the Earth. At least
some of the stromatolites are interpreted to have formed by chemoautotrophic archaea or bacteria that grew in proximity to, and locally within, shallow hydrothermal seafloor
vents or surficial hot spring systems. We aim to employ synchrotron-XFM element mapping to unravel the chemical signature of the Dresser Formation stromatolites,
specifically with respect to hydrothermally-sourced transition (e.g., Fe, Ni and Zn) and post-transition (e.g., As) metals that are known to be vital for microbial metabolism
