We investigated the ecological mechanisms that structure soil denitrifying communities before and during one year after an experimental fire in Mediterranean shrublands. To do so, we sampled topsoils (0-5 cm) immediately before, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 1 year after fire (n=7; N=35 plots), and sequenced bacterial nirS and nirK genes. We tested how changes in resource availability (carbon, nitrate, micronutrients) and abiotic conditions (pH, electrical conductivity) in response to the experimental fire alter the balance of forces shaping the co-existence between soil denitrifiers.
