Ghosts of Cesky Krumlov

BACKGROUND Informed by the 2016 Czech and Slovak film festival theme of Text and Texture; Betwixt, explores the imaginative zone between film, visual art and books to research how carefully chosen text and visual imagery work together to communicate concepts, stories and atmospheres. Complementing the graphic language of film posters, this exhibition features the unfolding storyboards of hand-crafted concertina artists' books, together with sketch books, comic books and installations, the works employ tropes of film and literature - text, titles, typography, montage, narrative and framing - to sit in dialogue with the poetic visuals of classic Czech film posters and film. CONTRIBUTION Curator for the exhibition selected ten artist's books by Ellis. " Ghosts of Cesky Krumlov" a concertina book commissioned for the exhibition researches in what ways can the concept of the concertina book complement a filmic narrative? Ellis has researched the subversive narrative of Surrealist film, coupled with direct references to the C14th Bohemian town of Cesky Krumlov, to explore the possibilities of visual "jump cuts" flash backs and fracture in temporality through the reveling and concealing of pages and images in elongated concertina book form that reference and complement Czeck surrealist film. SIGNIFICANCE ACMI is the leading Australian museum for the moving image; Mediatheque is the hub for exploring the indeterminate middle ground between books and film in this year's festival. CaSFFA exhibited an assortment of books relating to the film program and exhibitions including comics and illustrated novels provided by the Melbourne and Prague UNESCO City of Literature offices. Curated by Carmen Reid the exhibition includes works by Stephen Banham, Bernard Caleo, Angela Cavalieri, Peter Ellis, Petr Herel, Gracia & Louise, Andrew Keall, Carmen Reid and Sally Tape.
