Deep Sea reference database for benthic protist communities: For the taxonomic assignment of our deep-sea sediment sample sequences, we used a reference database called V9_DeepSea. Besides V9 sequences from the Protist Ribosomal Reference database PR2 v4.11.1, we included 102 in-house Sanger-sequenced strains of which the majority was isolated from deep-sea (57 strains) and marine surface waters (32 strains).
