Microbial Community Study of Remediation Site Samples and Microcosm Samples Degrading 1,1,1-Trichloroethane

In this project, groundwater samples were collected from a contaminated site located in North York Ontario between September 2015 and June 2016 prior to and during the in-situ remediation of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (predominant contaminant) in which guar-gum and granular zero valent iron were injected as the remedy. Another set of samples were collected from microcosm study in which the collected groundwater was used as the inocula and the degradation of the dosed 1,1,1-trichloroethane was investigated. DNA was extracted from both groundwater and microcosm samples and amplicon sequencing was conducted to study the microbial communities in these samples.
