南海(South China Sea)位于中国大陆的南面，通过狭窄的海峡或水道，东与太平洋相连，西与印度洋相通，是一个东北-西南走向的半封闭海。南海南北纵跨约2000公里，东西横越约1000公里，总面积约350万平方公里。
中国的南海诸岛包括东沙群岛、西沙群岛、中沙群岛和南沙群岛。这些群岛分别由数量不等的岛屿、沙洲、礁盘、暗沙和浅滩组成。这四个群岛都是中国领土的组成部分。其中南沙群岛岛礁最多，分布范围最大，太平岛是其中最大岛屿，面积约0.5平方公里，植被茂盛，拥有淡水。

The South China Sea lies to the south of the Chinese mainland. Connected to the Pacific Ocean in the east via narrow straits or waterways and linked to the Indian Ocean in the west, it is a semi-enclosed sea trending from northeast to southwest. It spans approximately 2,000 kilometers from north to south and about 1,000 kilometers from east to west, with a total area of about 3.5 million square kilometers.
China's South China Sea Islands include the Dongsha Islands, Xisha Islands, Zhongsha Islands and Nansha Islands. These archipelagos are respectively composed of varying numbers of islands, sandbanks, reefs, submerged reefs and shoals. All four archipelagos are integral parts of Chinese territory. Among them, the Nansha Islands have the largest number of islets and reefs and the widest distribution area. Taiping Island, the largest islet among them, covers an area of approximately 0.5 square kilometers, with lush vegetation and accessible freshwater resources.
The South China Sea Islands Map Database (1918-1948) has collected, sorted out and annotated a total of 7 maps of the South China Sea.
