The Ministry of the Environment, Japan, conducted a survey on the distribution of 10 medium- and large-sized mammal species (Sika deer (*Cervus nippon*), Japanese serow (*Capricornis crispus*), Japanese macaque (*Macaca fuscata*), Asian black bear (*Ursus thibetanus*), Brown bear (*Ursus arctos*), Wild boar (*Sus scrofa*), Red fox (*Vulpes vulpes*), Japanese raccoon dog (*Nyctereutes procyonoides*), Japanese badger (*Meles anakuma*), Javan mongoose (*Herpestes javanicus*)) from fiscal year 2000 (Heisei 12) to fiscal year 2003 (Heisei 15) during the 6th Basic Survey on Species Diversity - Mammal Distribution Survey, using the same survey methods as the animal distribution survey (mammals) conducted in the 2nd Basic Survey. This dataset was converted into GIS data from mesh data (CSV file, available on the data download page) developed based on the "National Distribution Mesh Comparison Map: Sika Deer (*Cervus nippon*)" published by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (2004). We extracted location information where species presence was confirmed during the 6th Basic Survey, and merged it with the 5x regional mesh using the World Geodetic System (Japanese Geodetic Datum 2011; JGD2011).
