Rapeseed is a very important edible oil crops in the world. Root architecture, especially lateral root formation in response to environmental conditions is crucial for plant survival and productivity. In the current experiment, the seedlings of Zhongshuang 11 (ZS 11), the elite conventional rapeseed variety, were treated with different concentrations of strigolactones (SLs, GR24) at 15 days after germination. The results showed that the lateral root length and root tips increased significantly when the concentrations ranged from 1.8×10-4 µM to 1.8 µM. In order to elucidate why the treatments with low concentrations of SLs could promote the growth of lateral root in rapeseed, transcriptomics and metabolomics conjoint analysis was conducted to investigate the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and metabolites in treated lateral root tissues. These results suggest that auxin and ethylene signaling is pivotal to regulate lateral root formation. Our work provides new insights into the lateral root development responding to hormonal stimuli and provides effective strategy to improve crop productively.
