Human Factor Driven Safety Enhancement: Ergonomic Risk Reduction and Behavioral Improvements in Industrial Laboratory

PT SUCOFINDO is a company engaged in inspection, testing, certification, training, and consulting services, including coal quality analysis at its Bengkulu Branch. In 2023, there were 2 injury incidents and 1 near miss in the preparation laboratory. These issues have increased the risk of occupational accidents, potentially decreasing productivity and compromising employee safety. This research aims to evaluate and reduce Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) risks using HIRARC, Behavior Based Safety (BBS), RULA, and REBA methods. The study involved 2 primary informants, namely QSHE and Human Capital (HC), and 7 supporting informants, including the Preparation Laboratory Coordinator and Preparator Staff. Data collection techniques included field observations and interviews. The identification phase identified 19 sources of hazards categorized into 26% extreme risk, 84% high risk, 16% moderate risk, and 5% low risk. Evaluation using RULA and REBA methods indicated high-risk scores of 7 and 9, respectively. BBS analysis revealed management commitment at 75.34%, compliance with OHS regulations at 36.66%, communication effectiveness at 75%, worker competence at 44.43%, and worker involvement at 66.67%. Post-control implementation, 79% of hazards decreased to moderate risk, with 21% classified as low risk. Improvements include identifying and controlling OHS hazards, designing ergonomic work postures, and strengthening BBS and OHS programs. Future mitigation steps involve intensive OHS and BBS training, SOP and PPE enhancement, routine work posture evaluations, improved internal communication, efficient incident reporting and investigation systems, and employee involvement in hazard identification. These measures aim to enhance operational performance, ensure a safer working environment at PT SUCOFINDO Bengkulu Branch, and support long-term business sustainability.
